Our biblical study breaks are an opportunity to be guided through a whole book of the Holy Scriptures by outstanding scholars. Each course begins on Monday afternoon at 2pm and finish at 2pm Thursday (no evening sessions).
The first session is The Psalms: Their History, Use and Abiding Significance, 18 to 21 January 2010 with Emeritus Professor J.W. Rogerson:
The Psalms are known as ‘the Psalms of David’. But did he compose them, and if not, who did? How were they used in ancient Israel and in the New Testament, and how have they been used in the Christian Church? Why do some Christian traditions have 153 Psalms, and why are they numbered differently in the Hebrew and Greek traditions? How have theories about their use in ancient Israel affected modern translations? How might we deal with their ‘vindictive’ elements, and take hold of their significance for today?
