Perhaps you could come along to the event and ask the author. We are hoping for some discussion.

What evidence do you have that English somehow fosters clear thought in a way that, perhaps, other languages don't?

Delighted by your interest, James.

The dates for the series entitled, The Morality of New War are:
Mon 30 April, Tues 1, Wed 2, Thur 3 May 2012

Each lecture begins at 7 pm in Salisbury Cathedral, which is right next to Sarum College and about a 15 minute walk from the train station. You can stay in Sarum College the week if you like (good library, bookshop and delicious food), just contact us at hospitality@sarum.ac.uk to make arrangements. Visit this site's page on B&B for details and rates.

Here's the narrative for the series:

With the rise of asymmetric warfare, does the traditional understanding of just war theory work in the 21st century? Does human rights legislation have a place on the battlefield? And has secularisation undermined the moral substructure of the British army?

Giles Fraser lectures on ethics and leadership at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham. He is a frequent contributor to Radio 4’s Thought For The Day and the former canon chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

With lectures on four consecutive evenings, why not come for the week and enjoy being just steps away from Salisbury Cathedral?

While you’re here, you can enjoy Sarum’s delicious meals, specialist library and
bookshop. Contact Alison Ogden for programme and accommodation details.
Price £24 series of four; £7 per lecture
