2017 Sarum Lectures – Percy Dearmer: The Sarum Rite, Art and English Tradition

  • Course Dates: Tue 25 April, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

This Sarum Lecture series, held in partnership with Salisbury Cathedral, will look at four Anglicans from the early twentieth-century Church of England who revived spirituality at a time when people were questioning institutional religion.

This lecture looks at Percy Dearmer, a Church of England priest well-known for his Parson’s Handbook, Percy sought to revive liturgy through beauty, the arts and the identification of an English Catholic tradition which he found to be epitomized in the pre-Reformation Sarum Rite.

Speaker Jane Shaw is Dean for Religious Life and Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University, and Canon Emerita of Salisbury Cathedral. She was formerly Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and Dean of Divinity and Fellow of New College, Oxford.

Tickets are £8 per lecture or £27 for the series of four. Tickets are available on the door or in advance from Sarum College. Subsequent lectures take place on Thursday 27 April, Tuesday 2 May and Thursday 4 May. There is a seminar in Sarum College on Friday 5 May.
