Seminar in Spiritual Direction

This course developed by Sarum College in partnership with the Diocese of Salisbury offers an opportunity to share and deepen your experience of spiritual direction. The course is suitable both for those new to spiritual direction and for those who are more experienced.

Course objectives

  • To explore the nature and dynamics of the spiritual relationship;
  • To consider some of the underlying issues related to spiritual direction, eg. conversion, prayer and discernment;
  • To provide opportunities for participants to work in small groups to gain practical experience of receiving, giving and reflecting on spiritual direction.

Course structure

The course will be delivered over 12 afternoons in autumn 2011, from 1.45pm until 5pm. Each session will begin with centring prayer and a talk by an experienced spiritual director with opportunity for discussion.

Course participants will then work in triads, with an occasional opportunity for a fish bowl situation. Halfway through the course the membership of the triads will be changed to give participants a wider experience.

Facilitated by Canon Anne Long, Canon Peter Ball and Sr Mairead Quigley. Guest lecturers are: Harvey Gillman, Keith Lamdin, Patrick Moore, Barbara Mosse and Andrew Walker.

NB: It is mandatory that all participants commit to attendance on all days, for their own sake and also for the sake of the whole group. Only in extreme circumstances will they be excused.

Fee : £275 (including refreshments and library membership for the duration of the course)
Owing to the nature of the course, the number of participants is limited to 18.

    • Anne Long is a retired Anglican priest with a particular interest in contemporary poetry. She teaches the art of listening and has written 'Praise him in the Dance', 'Listening' and two booklets on spiritual direction.

  • Tutor: Peter Ball

    • Peter Ball acts as spiritual director for a wide range of people and is the author of several books on the subject. He was a parish priest in London and Canon Chancellor of St. Paul's. He was also a founder member of Spiritual Directors in Europe and is a long-standing member of Spiritual Directors International.

  • Tutor: Mairead Quigley RSCJ

    • For retreats (Warminster & Buckfast): This retreat is led by members of the Sarum College Ecumenical Retreat Team headed by Sr Mairead Quigley rscj, who is a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart and senior chaplain at Sarum College where her role includes spiritual direction, retreats and supervision. Sr Mairead Quigley RSCJ is a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Pastoral Tutor to the MA programmes and Senior Chaplain at Sarum College.
