How the politically risky term ‘gospel’ takes us to the heart of Mark’s concerns in a narrative that is pervaded by mystery, shadowed by suffering, and combines what seems prima facie to be a very high view of Jesus and a very low view of his followers. For over a hundred years Mark’s Gospel has been interpreted in terms of a ‘messianic secret’. Now dissentient voices are proposing a different ‘core’ idea.

- David Catchpole is a Scholar-in-Residence at Sarum College and Emeritus Professor of Theological Studies at the University of Exeter. His specialist interests centre on the New Testament, particularly the gospels and the quest of the historical Jesus.
