‘Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ – the enigmatic invitation of that maestro of gospel writing, Mark. In recent years we have learnt to listen with the ears of those who first heard his great work read aloud, and to be sensitive to the skilled construction of his story. And so there come alive in fresh ways the hidden meaning of the secrecy of his Jesus, the apparent oddity of his treatment of Jesus’s followers, the bold coverage of a horrifying death, and the resonance of the final message that ‘he is not here’. Mark’s Jesus is alive! Mark’s Gospel comes alive!
