It would be arguable that the resurrection of Jesus belongs outside the sphere of history. But the claims of the early Christians to have ‘seen’ Jesus a few days after his death or to have discovered an open and empty tomb certainly belong within history. What might have been the historical basis of those claims? No topic we have considered has more profound theological implications than this one.

- David Catchpole is a Scholar-in-Residence at Sarum College and Emeritus Professor of Theological Studies at the University of Exeter. His specialist interests centre on the New Testament, particularly the gospels and the quest of the historical Jesus.
