Matthew and his Religion: Christianity or Christian Judaism (part 2)

It has been said that ‘Matthew and Paul, if they had known one another would not have been best friends’! We certainly note in Matthew an instinctively conservative position on everything that determines the relationship between Christianity and Judaism. Sometimes his outlook is as Jewish as can be, at other times Jewish people get very short shrift. We set about trying to reach a decision about his religion, to discover his presuppositions, and to trace out the implications.

    • David Catchpole is a Scholar-in-Residence at Sarum College and Emeritus Professor of Theological Studies at the University of Exeter. His specialist interests centre on the New Testament, particularly the gospels and the quest of the historical Jesus.
