Here is another ‘story of Jesus’ but one that seems to belong to a different world – for example, almost nothing of Jesus’ own great theme of God’s kingdom, and almost nothing but the theme of Jesus’ unique relationship with God. The atmosphere seems very heavy as the Jesus of John sets about his work of revealing that he is the revealer. This Gospel, which Christians have particularly treasured, never ceases to delight and also at times to worry us.
