Pray Without Ceasing

This series offers the opportunity to learn about and experience a particular pattern of Christian prayer.

Not quite like a traditional retreat, there will be a mixture of teaching, group activity as well as time for prayer and reflection. Leaders will be experienced leaders of worship, scholars and  acilitators; the College chaplain will also be available. The events are ecumenical and are open to all.

Typically, these events last for 24 hours from late morning on the first day until early afternoon on the second day.

Places are limited to 15 per session.  Price per session: £120 full board

Pray Without Ceasing: The Liturgy of the Hours

15 to 16 April
Christians interpret the command to pray without ceasing in many different ways, in lives of active service or of continual meditation or in a combined lifestyle with frequent times of prayer.

The most enduring pattern in Christian history is the Liturgy of the Hours and in 24 hours together, the group will learn about their origins and content while praying the full cycle.

Leaders:

Sister Francisca (Patricia Rumsey)
is a member of the Poor Clare community at Arkley, North London. She holds a PhD and a post-doctoral licence in historical theology and has published on the theology of time and patterns of monastic prayer.

Dr Juliette Day
is Director of Liturgical Studies at Sarum College. She chairs the Society for Liturgical Study and is co-editor of the journal Anaphora.

Pray Without Ceasing: Journeys of Faith

18 to 19 November

Christian worship is embodied – we kneel, stand, bow; we walk in procession, we journey to holy places.

In Journeys of Faith, we will learn about the function of ritual in worship and learn to be aware of how we use of our bodies in worship. We will explore communal journeys using the idea of pilgrimage and ‘stations’, and personal journeys using labyrinth.

Kathryn Turner
is director of Wisdom House retreat centre in Romsey and leads workshops on prayer and worship as part of Wellsprings.

Sister Mairead Quigley
is a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Pastoral Tutor to the MA in Christian Spirituality and Sarum College Chaplain.

Contact Anne Jensen for more information about Pray Without Ceasing programmes.

Wisdom Symposium, 1 to 2 May 2010

Sarum College's international symposium will consider the multifaceted role played by wisdom within Christian thought and practice and reflect on ways in which wisdom can inform the mission of the Christian churches today. Our purpose in organising such an event is to carefully discern how wisdom can help our churches to interrelate theology, spirituality and Christian practice.
