Book of the Month: November

Wake Up to Advent!

By John Sentamu

As we grow older we aspire to become more ourselves. We do our best. We find our way. We sometimes stumble on our journey. We find our voice and hold firm to our beliefs (and even) our opinions! We become more aware as we struggle to be our best selves in the process of becoming more tolerant and open to the spiritual dimension of life.

John Sentamu has a distinctive voice shaped by his own unique journey of faith. He has stamina, good humour and a deep desire to share the faith. This finds expression in this book as he picks up four themes over the weeks of Advent ( Wake Up! Clean Up! Feed Up ! and Grow Up!). Within each of these weeks he picks up a Bible passage and breaks open the life and love within Scripture offered for our flourishing. Each short offering is both head and heart work. It is, like Archbishop John himself, motivational as we are invited into a journey of reflecting and rejoicing. We are asked to consider our own journey of love and to reflect what shape faith takes through our living in this complex and wonderful world of ours.

You will not be disappointed by these pages. He shares some wonderful anecdotes from his own journey. Grounded, stimulating, alive, challenging – these words and the life that lies within them offer you food for your journey. Take some time to engage with its wisdom.

John, when preaching at Temple Balsall in the Diocese of Birmingham when he was Bishop and I was one of his parish priests, with characteristic candour told us, ‘there is no retirement from the Christian life’. Indeed so and Sarum College wishes John and Margaret a happy and generative ‘next stage’ beyond York. I hope that his voice will continue to be heard for the sake of the Kingdom! Thank you for this Advent book.
