Lantern Procession to the Christmas Market – 6pm start. More than 100 lanterns will process though the streets of Salisbury to the Christmas market for the official opening ceremony.
Christmas Lights – See the city lights being switched on with a special ceremony, Thursday 22 November, 6pm in the market square.
Darkness to Light – Salisbury Cathedral’s spectacular Advent Procession – for some, an unmissable start to the Christmas season – will be held on Friday 30 November, Saturday 1 December at 7pm and Sunday 2 December at 5pm. The event begins with the Cathedral in total darkness and silence as the single Advent Candle is lit. By the end the whole interior of the magnificent building is bathed in the light of 1300 candles.
Tower Tour and Evensong – A lovely way to see Salisbury City’s Christmas Lights from above. Start with a Tower Tour at 4.30pm, which includes a guided tour of the Cathedral and Chapter House with Magna Carta before climbing 332 steps to the base of the Cathedral spire. Follow this with an Evensong service sung by the superb Cathedral Choir.
Group Carol Concerts – Tuesday 11 and Friday 14 December, 2.00pm
Traditional carols, seasonal refreshments of hot mulled wine and delicious mince pies in the cloisters immediately after the service.
‘A Christmas Celebration‘ – Wednesday 12 December, 7.30pm
Salisbury Cathedral Choir with John Challenger on organ, directed by David Halls.
A special concert of favourite Christmas readings and music.
Choral Concert – Saturday 15 December, 7.30pm
Salisbury Musical Society and Chelsea Opera Group Orchestra play Bach’s Magnificat and Howard Blake’s Benedictus, directed by David Halls – hear two choral masterpieces separated by two and a half centuries.
The Salisbury Christmas market opens on Thursday 29 November and continues through Sunday 16 December. Details
Late-night shopping begins on Thursday 22 November, after the Christmas Lights ceremony at 6pm in the market square. Many of the city’s shops are open until 9pm on the Thursdays before Christmas, and Sarum College Bookshop joins them on November 29th.
