Art, Belief and Spirituality

This module will enable students to understand the relationship between Christian Spirituality and art.

This relationship will be placed in historical, cultural and theological perspectives, and the students will be encouraged to develop their own aesthetic and spiritual awareness. The module will also enable students to appreciate the place of art in Christian worship and the life of the Church.

Those not on the MA programme are very welcome to book on this module as an auditor.

Tutors:
Louise Nelstrop is Programme Leader for the MA in Christian Spirituality at Sarum College. She specialises in medieval spirituality, particularly mysticism and has conducted research in practical theology, especially as it relates to the emerging church and healthcare; Sophie Hacker teaches Fine Art to MA level and lectures on art and spirituality. She is Arts and Exhibitions Consultant to Winchester Cathedral and is a trustee of ACE (Art and Christian Enquiry); Graham Howes is an Emeritus Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and the author of The Art of the Sacred – an introduction to the aesthetics of art and belief. He is a Trustee of ACE; Charles Pickstone is an Anglican priest living in South London. Educated in Oxford, Paris and Leeds, he lectures and writes widely on Art and Spirituality.
