TQQ: Life in the Spirit: Sex and the Body
- Course Dates: Tue 18 June 2019, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

For much of Christian history, building upon Platonic notions of contemplation and wisdom, it has been assumed that the higher interests of the human soul are sharply at odds with the desires of the body.
And yet, at the same time, even these (monastic) traditions affirmed the essential goodness of the body. And they also tended to attach overwhelming significance to desire (eros), often figured in sexual imagery for communion with God.
This session will survey some of this history – easily lost from modern view – and then consider its many ambiguities as well as the ambiguities of modern Christianity regarding the body and its pleasures.
