Western Christian Mysticism

This module explores the riches of Western Christian mystical tradition.

The course begins by looking at the foundations of the tradition and moves on to consider the English Mystics, the Rhineland Mystics and the Spanish Mystics.

Students will gain an overview of the historical development of the Western Christian Mystical tradition, and identify and analyse key historical figures and movements within that tradition.

Five places are set aside for those not enrolled on the degree programme who may book on this module as an auditor. Participation may be online or onsite (subject to government guidance at the time).

Dr Karen O'Donnell is Coordinator for the Centre for Contemporary Spirituality and Programme Leader for the MA in Christian Spirituality at Sarum College. She is a feminist, ecumenical, practical theologian whose interdisciplinary research interests span theology, spirituality, and pedagogy. Guest lecturers Dr Beth Dodd is Director of Studies, Centre for Formation in Ministry. Her research interests include theological aesthetics, genre theory and 17th C metaphysical poetry. Michael Hahn is an expert in the Franciscan mystics and has taught and published on Francis, Clare, and Angela Foligno in particular. Dr Jenny Leith is a political theologian based at the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide. Her work is focused on discipleship and formation with a particular interest in Christian identity. Dr Peter Tyler is Senior Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at St. Mary’s University and is a registered integrative psychotherapist. He has lectured and written widely on the Spanish Mystics.
