Foundations and Forms of Christian Spirituality

  • Course Dates: Mon 10 October 2022 to Thu 13 October 2022

The module will introduce students to the roots and types of spirituality in the Christian tradition until the Reformation.

It will explore a number of spiritual traditions within Christianity and enable students to place them in their historical and philosophical contexts. Students will become aware of the problems we face in matters of interpretation when dealing with classical spiritual texts and will be encourage to apply a range of interpretative methods to the texts they are introduced to. 

Those not enroled in a postgraduate study programme are very welcome to book (limit 5 places) on this module as an auditor.

Tutors:
Dr Karen O'Donnell is Programme Leader for postgraduate studies in Christian Spirituality at Sarum College. She is a feminist, ecumenical, practical theologian whose interdisciplinary research interests span theology, spirituality, and pedagogy. Dr Jayme Reaves is the Director of Academic Development and programme leader for the Centre for Encountering the Bible as well as the Short Course programme at Sarum College. She is a public theologian, with a specialist interest in making the Bible, theology, and theological methods more accessible to the public and helping congregations and communities reflect on the public impact of their theology. Guest tutors will be announced in due course.
