A Rough Guide To… Christ the Word of God

  • Course Dates: Wed 17 November, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

In the lead up to the festival of Christ the King, this course seeks to inspire you with a vision of Christ as the Word of God.

We will look together at John 1.1-14, examining the somewhat esoteric biblical and spiritual traditions that lie behind early Christian ideas of Christ as Logos, the creative power of God.

In relation to these traditions we will explore debates surrounding the popular writings of Richard Rohr on Christ the eternal Logos as a ‘blueprint’ for all creation. As an alternative to Rohr, we will examine Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s description of the Word as an oxymoron in relation to the place of Christ in contemporary culture.

Christianity has often been styled a religion of the Word, and so we will think about the implications of a theology of Christ as Word for our approach to scripture and the practice of preaching, exploring, as T.S. Eliot poetically put it: ‘the Word unheard, The Word without a word, the Word within/ The world and for the world’.

An online booking portal is forthcoming.
