‘A Sound We Christen’: The Language of Worship
- Course Dates: Tue 14 September, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
This course will briefly explore the roots of Christian liturgy and what is meant by a ‘poetics of liturgy’.
Attention will be given to liturgy as performance, with a study of the important and controversial writings of Bishop Amalarius of Metz (d. c 850). Further attention will be given to the rich liturgical life of late medieval England before the Prayer Book of 1549, and its ‘bi-lingual’ worship in Latin and English.
Finally, we will consider the principles underlying Common Worship and its language and the problems that they might pose for worship today and in the future.
