Awakening, Communing, Refiguring: Thomas Merton’s Continuing Ministry

  • Course Dates: Tue 23 June, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

This day begins with a brief overview of Merton’s life-work.

We will then focus on ways in which his communicative monasticism engages readers in
the everyday struggles to live faithfully and attentively between classical Christian sources, critical social currents and the neighbours we are learning to love.

Thomas Merton was a monk and, for those of us who are not, he generates strangely creative tensions as he draws readers into potentially transformative encounter with a world of prophets, psalmody and Gospel around which his monastic living was designed. His literary legacy traces a disarmingly honest struggle to live a wholehearted, full-bodied, deep-rooted Christian counternarrative in the face of social crisis and dehumanising forces. He continues to resource and guide sympathetic readers living between the complex realities of present-day social crises and a desire to trust that God is with us and makes himself known to us in Christ.

This short course begins with a brief overview of Merton’s life-work, then focuses on ways in which his communicative monasticism engages readers in everyday struggles to live faithfully and attentively between classical Christian sources, critical social currents and the neighbours we are learning to love.
