Biblical Study Break: Reading Neglected Gems in the Hebrew Bible: Ruth, Lamentations, Songs, Ecclesiastes, Esther
- Course Dates: Mon 28 June to Fri 2 July
In the Jewish tradition, these five books are called The Megilloth (aka The Five Scrolls), but they receive very little attention in the Christian tradition and lectionary for a few reasons but mostly because God is largely absent in these texts.
Why? And what purpose does God’s presence or absence serve in these texts?
This series of courses over five days offers an opportunity to do a deep dive into each book, looking at the themes that arise from each individually as well as from the collection as a whole.
The order of the days will be as follows:
Monday, 28 June: Ruth
Tuesday, 29 June: Lamentations
Wednesday, 30 June: Song of Solomon
Thursday, 1 July: Ecclesiastes
Friday, 2 July: Esther
The books are presented in this order as they build on one another in theme and complexity of theology and use of Hebrew language, though you do not necessarily need to have done the prior days to get something out of a single day.
The timetable for each day will be three sessions held between 1pm-6pm UK/Ireland time Monday – Friday (8am-1pm EST in US/Canada). Pick the specific days you want to study or join in for the whole week – you choose!
