Contemplating the Divine: Art in the Medieval World
- Course Dates: Thu 12 May 2016, 10:30 am to Fri 13 May 2016, 4:30 pm
This course will examine key artworks produced between c.5AD and c.1500, ranging from the illustrious Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels, to metalwork reliquaries, the painted interiors of medieval cathedrals, and the dazzling mosaics at Monreale Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.
The course will also focus on how religious artworks functioned in the medieval period, how objects and ritual practice were used to elevate the mind, and how these approaches differ from the ‘experience’ of artwork in the twenty-first century.
