Into the North: The Defeat of Paganism and the Rise of Christianity in Scandinavia

  • Course Dates: Thu 17 October, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This lecture will explore the enormous difficulties encountered by early missionaries as they attempted to take the Gospel to the North, the toppling of the Viking gods, and how trade and war with Christian states made their impression on these fiercely independent peoples.

We shall look at the earliest Christian artefacts found in Scandinavia and Iceland, and at those which looked both back and forwards, to the old religions and the new.
