Into the North: The Defeat of Paganism and the Rise of Christianity in Scandinavia
- Course Dates: Thu 17 October 2019, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

This lecture will explore the enormous difficulties encountered by early missionaries as they went beyond the confines of the Roman Empire. How were the powerful Viking gods toppled? Was contact, through war and trade, with Christian states to make a difference to the Norsemens’ thinking? We shall also look at early Christian/pagan artefacts, and the famous early stave churches in Norway and Sweden, some of which remain as places of worship today.
We shall look at the earliest Christian artefacts found in Scandinavia and Iceland, and at those which looked both back and forwards, to the old religions and the new.
