Leadership Seminar with David Hurst
- Course Dates: Mon 14 November 2016, 11:00 am to 1:45 pm
David Hurst has a unique knowledge of organizations – their function and their failure – both in theory and in practice.
He has spent twenty-five years as an operating manager, often in crises and turnaround conditions, and is also a widely experienced consultant, teacher, and writer on business.
He is the author of Crisis & Renewal: Meeting the Challenge of Organizational Change (Harvard Business School Press, 1995); Learning from the Links: Mastering Management Using Lessons From Golf (The Free Press, 2002) and The New Ecology of Leadership: Business Mastery in a Chaotic World (Columbia University Press, 2012).
Tim Harle, Programme Leader for Sarum’s MA in Christian Approaches to Leadership introduces the seminar:
“I first became aware of David Hurst’s work through his Crisis and Renewal (Harvard Business School Press, 1995). His combination of evolutionary thought, lessons from living systems, and emerging insights from the complexity sciences resonated very strongly with the concepts I was later to describe as Post-Newtonian Leadership (David refers to Descartes, rather than Newton, but many of the ideas about cause-and-effect, rationality and dualism are similar). There are also strong resonances with Peter Robertson’s work on S-curves, again reflecting underlying evolutionary and complexity concepts (all that is missing is John Bowlby’s work on attachment!). Students on our Leadership MA find A New Ecology of Leadership useful, and I hope that some of them will be joining us for this seminar.”
