Leading by Story

  • Course Dates: Wed 13 November, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

We tell stories; we live in stories; we lead by story.

Jesus told stories, and congregations invite others (or not) to join their story. The social sciences have taken a ‘narrative turn’ which offers new ways for thinking about how we work together.

We will spend time telling and retelling our stories, and thinking about how we can make stories more attractive and more memorable. How do we invite people to join the story of the church? How do we lead a church forward while honouring its story? How do we help people to let their stories move forward? How do we distinguish fact and fiction in the stories we are told? How do we nurture stories that give life? How do we help people to let go of toxic stories? How do we build, and live, exciting stories against a background of stories of decline? In the morning we will get used to thinking deliberately about the stories of ourselves and our churches, and about how this changes how we understand the way we work and worship together. In the afternoon we will focus more on how to make better choices about what stories are told and how they are told.

Participants will work on the stories they lead by.

In collaboration with The Centre for Formation in Ministry.
