Preaching, Poetry and Prophetic Speech

  • Course Dates: Tue 22 June, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

This day explores how poetic processes and forms are integral to the practice of preaching.

We will examine the prophetic possibilities of poetic preaching, drawing on the idea of poetry as a practice of human speech to God that can also echo the voice of the Lord.

We will read some classic spiritual poems together, as well as some recent examples of poetic-prophetic speech events, including spoken word poetry. We will explore in practical ways to apply these ideas to public speech about God, particularly through preaching.
