Reading Scripture Together: Encounters with Rabbis in the Gospel of John
- Course Dates: Sat 4 April 2020, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled.
This conversational one-day course series will re-read selected sacred texts in detail and consider the ways they have been interpreted, both in the written word and in art, and on their relevance and meaning to us today.
The teachings and customs of the early Rabbis form a seitz im leben for the ministry of Christ and the accounts of his ministry we find in the New Testament. Yet they are surprisingly absent from much New Testament scholarship. In this study day, we shall explore the influence of Rabbis in the New Testament through several encounters with Rabbis recorded in the opening chapters of St John’s gospel.
All you need to bring to this day is your favourite translation of the New Testament and a readiness to look afresh at some very well-known texts from chapters 1-4 of St John. (You absolutely do not need to read Greek but if you do, feel free to bring along your Greek NT so that you can give the tutor a harder time). After a brief introduction to 1st-century rabbinism, we shall spend the bulk of the day looking at some key meetings between Jesus and other Rabbis as recorded by St John.
