Spirituality and Stained Glass
- Course Dates: Thu 25 May 2017, 10:00 am to Fri 26 May 2017, 4:30 pm
This course will examine the design, development and production methods of stained glass produced between the seventh century and the present day.
We will focus on key artworks such as the Anglo-Saxon glass at Monkwearmouth and Jarrow abbeys, the elaborate medieval Gothic windows at Chartres and Canterbury cathedrals, and later Renaissance and Netherlandish glass designs.
We will also consider Victorian and pre-Raphaelite glass designers and companies – such as Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris & Co. – and moden-day glass artists such as Marc Chagall, Louis Comfort Tiffany and John Piper.
The course will also examine ways in which glass panels functioned as objects of spiritual devotion.
