The Taizé Community: A Symposium at Sarum College
- Course Dates: Fri 30 October 2015, 12:00 pm to Sat 31 October 2015, 1:45 pm
Sarum College is the venue for an academic symposium that will explore and review the significance of the Taizé Community.
This event is organised to mark the 75th year since the founding of the Taizé community in 1940 and the centenary anniversary of the birth of its founder, Brother Roger.
Leaders of the established Christian churches—popes, metropolitans, archbishops of Canterbury—would visit with amazement. They could not understand how, as the world turned unremittingly secular and their own churches dwindled down to congregations of old women, one monastery in France could be crammed with the noisy, enthusiastic, back-packing young … Pope John Paul II called Taizé “a spring of water”.
The Economist, August 25, 2005
The symposium will consist of papers given in full plenary sessions and shorter papers offered as optional seminars. As an alternative to ‘keynote’ speakers the symposium aims to create the opportunity to assemble a wide variety of contributors whose work and study relates to the unique phenomenon of the Taizé Community.
The programme includes the first UK screening of the film ‘Moments in the Life of Brother Roger’ – produced to mark the anniversary of the community and Brother Roger’s birth.
The symposium is open to all and is designed as a forum for exchange, questioning and debate.
It is hoped a selection of the papers will result in a publication.
A student concession is available for those delivering a paper as well as those in full or part-time education.
