The Words of the Prophets are Written on the Subway Walls: Art and the City
- Course Dates: Thu 1 November 2018, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

The city attracts some of the most elusive, creative and talented contemporary artists and our city landscapes have become the setting for some of our best known urban art, which is an enduring testimony to how the city both tantalises and torments us.
From Banksy to Shepherd Fairey, JR and Xavier Prou, street art has become some of the most iconic and provocative art of our generation.
Utilising material primarily from Roland Bean’s dissertation on urban theology ‘Imagining Jerusalem and Redeeming Babylon’, together with some insights gleaned from Jacqueline Bean’s research into the ‘dark materials’ of the portraiture of Marlene Dumas, they will examine some of the most iconic street art that both celebrates and questions life in the modern city. They will focus our minds, interactively, on the theological significance of these diverse and fascinating forms of uncurated, urban art.
