TQQ: The Gospel of Luke: The Story of a Radical Conservative (2/2)
- Course Dates: Tue 17 November 2015, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

To Luke we owe some of the most cherished stories in the Gospels – the parables of the good Samaritan and the prodigal son, or the framing of the whole story between infancy narratives and the story of the unrecognized stranger on the walk to Emmaus.
Luke loves the theme of freedom – but freedom from what? He highlights the role of women – but is he in any sense a feminist? He seems at times rather conservative by instinct, yet he gives us more revolutionary raw material than all the other Gospel writers put together. We shall enquire just what was going on as Luke so refashioned the story of Jesus as to make it a manifesto of liberation.
We have the impression of ‘meals, meals and more meals’ in Luke’s account of the significance of Jesus, so here is an area for enquiry about what the Lucan Jesus is all about. We also have the impression that the old expectation of a future crisis event centred on the returning figure of Jesus has run out of steam, so that needs checking as well.
