Weeping at the Grave we Make our Song? Funeral Ministry and the Church of England

Wed 8 May, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Funerals are changing. Once the preserve of ordained ministers – and nearly all conducted by the Church of England – there is now variety and choice for those who are faced with having to organise a funeral. The Church of England now only does about one third of all funerals in England and Wales: how can we ensure that we support families in the best way possible before, during and after the funeral service. Richard Hooker, Apostle of Anglicanism

Thu 6 June, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Richard Hooker (1554-1600) is rightly described as the seminal theologian of the Church of England. The first ecclesial theologian to attempt to plot a genuine ‘middle-way’ between the more aggressive Protestantisms of the European Continent and the often defensive rigidities of 16th century Roman Catholicism. He stands above all for the wisdom of the Anglican ‘middle-way’. His theology is deeply grounded both in scripture and in the ‘catholic’ and cosmic vision of early Christianity. At the same time he stands… Read more

Strategies for Mission from a Celtic Saint

Tue 25 June, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
The story of St Beuno, a 7th century Welsh abbot and saint, has many comparisons with our situation today. It requires navigating through later retellings that are composite, funny and fantastical, but the basics of the real story remain. We will investigate some underlying themes of Beuno’s ministry that are surprisingly contemporary and look at how they provide insights for strategies for mission in the church today. Preaching the Old Testament

Thu 17 October, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Most preachers are committed to preaching from the whole Word of God, and yet the Old Testament can be relatively neglected in the sermon diet of the average congregation. There are many reasons for this. This day will take an overview of the issues and questions that need to be addressed when preaching from the Old Testament, suggesting different ways in to difficult passages and applying these ideas to a specific case study. Leading by Story

Wed 13 November, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
We tell stories; we live in stories; we lead by story. Jesus told stories, and congregations invite others (or not) to join their story. The social sciences have taken a ‘narrative turn’ which offers new ways for thinking about how we work together. Participants will work on the stories they lead by.
