About the Confronting Anti-Semitism in Reading Christian Scriptures course
Attempts to whitewash Jesus’s Jewishness out of existence have been perpetrated in a number of ways throughout Christian history, some more subtle and (seemingly) defensible than others.
Drawing on her research on James Parkes, an English clergyman who dedicated many years to the problem of anti-Semitism and laid the blame entirely in the lap of the Church, Annie MacDonald will lead our reflection on confronting anti-Semitism when reading Christian Scriptures.
In this short online course we investigate how each of us — as individuals and in communities of faith – can confront and counter Christian anti-Semitism in the present. We will do this by looking at the teachings of Jesus against their background in the Hebrew Bible.
During the course students will have the opportunity to try out a process for engaging with one of Jesus’s parables in a new way, which they can subsequently use as a template for engagement with other biblical texts.
