About the Bonhoeffer’s Prison Poetry course
This one-day course will begin with an introduction to the life and thought of 20th century Lutheran theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
We will then focus on his time spent in Tegel Military Interrogation Prison in Berlin during World War II, during which he wrote several poems, as well as letters and fiction. We will study some of these poems together, unravelling their theological content and reflecting on what they reveal of Bonhoeffer’s experience of imprisonment.
This course will ask: What can we learn about Bonhoeffer’s theological development in prison through his poetry? What do the poems reveal about Bonhoeffer as pastor, member of the Resistance, teacher, lover, friend?
In addition to lectures, there will be time for discussion and questions throughout the day.
