The Church of England: Past, Present and Future course
This course will offer a brief history of the development of the Church of England and its church parties.
The morning will include an overview of various interpretations of Anglican theology and history with a focus on the Elizabethan Settlement, the rise of Evangelicalism and Anglo-Catholicism, as well as the relationships between church and state.
We will discuss whether there is a “standard theology” for Anglicanism and explore the revival of Evangelicalism from the 1970s, the impact of the 1960s and an overview of the current state of the Church of England and its prospects for the future.
About the tutor
Mark Chapman is Professor of the History of Modern Theology at Oxford University and has taught church history for over 30 years at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. He has written extensively on the history and theology of Anglicanism, including the titles Anglicanism: A Very Short Introduction, and Anglican Theology.
He served for 11 years on General Synod and co-chairs the Meissen Theological Conference which promotes ecumenical dialogue with the Evangelical Church in Germany. He is a priest and serves as Canon Theologian of Truro Cathedral.
