About the Let Those With Eyes To See: Discovering The Art Of The Parables course
In this course we will see Jesus’s parables as amazing works of art, rather than as metaphors with a single cryptic message to grasp.
These artworks are built up and framed in different ways in the gospels and need a patient eye to appreciate, and openness to allow their surprising meanings to unfold. We’ll have a go at exploring parables like the Treasure Buried in a Field to see just how much they shimmer with possibility.
We shall explore Jesus’s parables through the eyes of artists such as van Gogh, Rembrandt and Millais, to see how they each bring their active concerns to stories like The Good Samaritan. With insight about how artists have done this in the past, you will be invited to bring your own beliefs, values and questions to the picture, so that turning to Jesus’s parables becomes a more active, curious and rewarding process.
Roland Riem is Vice-Dean at Winchester Cathedral; Sophie Hacker is an artist specialising in stained glass.
