About the Reading Scripture Together: Elijah, The Miracle Man course
Elijah the Prophet is portrayed in Judaism and Christianity as a prophet who never died.
The biblical Elijah was a zealot who performed miracles and ascended to heaven in a chariot of fire. But his legacy has carried on in Jewish tradition in specific ways that are not as heavily emphasised in Christianity.
He is the prophet who metaphorically visits every Passover seder and every circumcision. He appears in medieval stories as a miracle man who saves innocents. And he even becomes associated with the story of the Hanukkah miracle.
We will explore these traditions and Elijah’s role as the messenger who announces the coming of the Messiah.
