Social Media for Parishes and Clergy course
Social media is often seen as a potentially miraculous driver of church growth especially among young people, if only the church had people who understood how to use it properly.
In reality, there are no miracles but patient use of social media over time can help churches and clergy build their profile with people of all ages in local communities.
In this half-day online course we will explore the dramatically changed social media scene of 2025; how to make effective use of Facebook, still the workhorse of the social media world; and the strengths and weaknesses of the other major social media platforms.
About the course leader
Now the rector of a multi-parish benefice near Devizes, Gerry Lynch has previously been Director of Communications for the Diocese of Salisbury, Executive Director of one of the main political parties in Northern Ireland, and a Whitehall civil servant. As well as maintaining a significant social media presence in his own right, he ran the Diocese’s social media channels for five years, significantly expanding their reach, and was an early pioneer of using social media in political campaigns—he was the first person ever to commission election advertising on Facebook in Northern Ireland. He is reading for a doctorate in ecclesiastical history at Oxford.
