Access Statement


Sarum College welcomes students and visitors with disabilities. A detailed overview of the facilities at Sarum College follows.  Please discuss any specific requirements with a member of our hospitality staff. A lift located just through Reception takes guests to all floors.

Pre-arrival


Sarum College is situated within the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral Close. The main entrance into the Cathedral Close is just through the High Street gates (just off the junction between New Street and Crane Bridge Road). The Cathedral Close is in the heart of this small city and access to shopping, rail station, coach station is very easy and can be reached very easily, either on foot, or by car or taxi. A taxi to the rail or coach station takes approximately 5 minutes, or they are 20 minutes’ walk. The three gates surrounding the Cathedral Close are all locked at night but there is access until 10.30 pm. A Close gate key can be issued, if requested, after arrival (a £10 deposit is required).

A Duty Manager is on duty in Reception and on-site overnight when visitors are in residence.

We regret that we are unable to accommodate pets unless they are accompanied by a person with disabilities who requires assistance.

Arrival & Car Parking


It is helpful to have an approximate time of arrival. Accommodation is usually ready for guests by 1pm. Parking in the college grounds is limited and cannot be guaranteed. However, every effort is made to accommodate resident visitors’ cars.

Main Entrance & Reception


There are no steps leading to the front door.  At 4ft wide and 8ft high, the heavy door is quite impressive. The front door is open from 9am – 5.30 pm Monday to Saturday. Please ring the bell on arrival after 5.30 pm. Once you have registered you will be given a code to go through the interior security door and to enter the building after hours.

You will be met in our spacious Reception area measuring 18ft by 25ft by either a duty receptionist or, after 5.30 pm, a duty manager. From this area you will be directed through a further door measuring 4ft wide which leads to our main staircase or lift to the bedroom areas.

The lift is 3ft wide and 6ft6in high and carries eight passengers. The main staircase is 4ft wide and each flight of stairs is 10.5ft with a 6inch rise. There are two small landings measuring 4ft6in square. There are stair rails on both sides of the staircase.

Guest Dining Room & Common Room


The guest dining room is located through the second door in the main entrance hall straight down the corridor. This corridor is carpeted throughout to the dining hall entrance. The corridor is 4ft6in wide and 120in long. There are office doors either side. The guest dining room is approached by a small landing where there is a chair lift to enable wheelchair users to descend to the dining hall level.

A member of staff will assist in the usage of the wheelchair lift. If the guest arriving requires to use the wheelchair lift this will be addressed on arrival. There are also four stairs measuring 4ft 9in wide, 13in length and 6in deep with one stair rail. The flooring to the dining room changes from carpet to polished floor. There are two double doors to the entrance to the dining room. The dining room is a large room 28ft wide and 45ft long. There are about 10 tables with upholstered chairs. Each table seats 6 or 8 people. Meals are served on a self-service basis with a long table measuring 4ft 5in by 12ft.

Tables are laid with cutlery, glasses, condiments and napkins, and food is taken from the serving table. A duty chef will be present in the kitchen for help or to answer any queries.

The Common Room is adjacent to the guest dining room and is on two levels. The lower level has chairs and tables in a café style arrangement. The licensed bar is also on this level. The lower level measures 26 ft by 18 ft Four wooden stairs brings the visitor up to the upper level. There is a handrail on each side of the stairs. Daily newspapers as well as other literature are available for all guests. The upper area measures 19 ft by 14 ft.

This whole area has four radiators and six windows. There are blinds at the windows which can be closed in the evenings if required.

The exit from the Common Room on the top level leads on to the main corridor and the Dining Room landing. To exit the building or to locate the visitor accommodation the guest should turn right.

Lounge & TV Room


There is a lounge with TV which is available to guests at the front of the building. Access is by travelling in the lift to level 2. The lounge is immediately facing the lift exit and is called the Hamilton Room. A superb view of Salisbury Cathedral can be seen from this room.

Bedrooms


Sarum College has thirteen en-suite bedrooms located on levels 1, 3 and 4 of the building. All bedrooms are carpeted throughout. Ten bedrooms have walk-in showers; three have baths with shower facilities. Two twin bedrooms have large sitting rooms.

Tea and coffee making facilities are provided in each room. Additional blankets are in all rooms. Each room has a wardrobe or hanging space, dressing table, upright chair and one comfortable chair. An information folder is accessible in each room. Hairdryers are available from Reception on request.

The rooms that are currently ensuite and not due for refurbishment during 2011-12 are as follows:

First Floor Bedrooms


The four first floor bedrooms are accessible up two fights of eight stairs with two dogleg landings. Three further stairs lead to the top of a long corridor. The bedrooms numbers begin at number 109 at the far end of the corridor to the left of the College Library. Alternatively, the lift takes passengers to the top of the stairs and the start of the long corridor. The four doors are 2ft 7in wide and 6ft 6in high each.

      • Bedroom One – Room 109

This is the first room on the left at the end of the corridor. It is a single ensuite room with access at one side only. There is a radiator in both the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has a bath with shower fitting, toilet and washbasin. This room would be suitable for anyone with a physical disability. There is a hand-hold adjacent to the toilet and another over the bath. The toilet is slightly higher in height than normal. The bedroom is carpeted and the bathroom has vinyl flooring.

      • Bedroom Two – Room 110

This room is situated immediately next door to Room 109. It is a single ensuite room with access to the bed from one side only and radiator in both bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has a walk-in shower cubicle. The room is carpeted and the bathroom has vinyl flooring.

      • Bedroom Three – Room 111

Immediately next door to Room 110, this room has a large sitting room measuring 15’ by 10’. It contains a sofa, coffee table, writing table; extra lighting. The sitting room overlooks the garden of our neighbours. There are two radiators in the sitting room. The sitting room leads into the twin bedded room where access to the beds is from both sides. There are two bedside tables, mirror, chair and vanity shelf. The room looks out onto Salisbury Cathedral Spire. Both rooms are carpeted. Just off the bedroom is a bathroom. This bathroom has a bath with shower fitting, washbasin and toilet. The floor has vinyl covering.

      • Bedroom Four – Room 113

The next room on this first floor wing, it has a standard double bed with access from both sides. There is one radiator, table, mirror, bedside tables, small coffee table. The room is carpeted. The en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower, washbasin and toilet. The floor has vinyl covering.

Third level bedrooms


The third level bedrooms are accessed by the lift which takes passengers to the top of level three and the start of a long corridor. At the end of the corridor are the bedrooms starting with Room 309. The four bedroom doors are 2ft 7in wide and 6ft 6in high each.

      • Bedroom Five – Room 309

This is the first room on the right at the end of the corridor. This room is a single en-suite room with access to the bed from one side only. There is a radiator in both the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has a bath with shower fitting, toilet and washbasin. This room would be suitable for anyone with a physical disability. There is a hand-hold adjacent to the toilet and another over the bath, and the toilet is slightly higher than normal. The bedroom is carpeted and the bathroom has vinyl flooring.

      • Bedroom Six – Room 310

This room, situated immediately next door to Room 309, is a single en-suite room with access to the bed from one side only and there is a radiator in both bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has a walk-in shower cubicle. The room is carpeted and the bathroom has vinyl flooring.

      • Bedroom Seven – Room 311

Immediately next to Room 310, this room has a large sitting room measuring 15ft by 10ft. The sitting room contains a sofa, coffee table, writing table; extra lighting. The sitting room overlooks the garden of our neighbours. There are two radiators in the sitting room. The sitting room leads into the twin bedded room where access to each bed is from both sides. There are two bedside tables, mirror, chair and vanity shelf. The room looks out onto Salisbury Cathedral Spire. Both rooms are carpeted. Just off the bedroom is a bathroom. This bathroom has a bath with shower fitting, washbasin, toilet.  The floor has vinyl covering.

      • Bedroom Eight – Room 313

The next room on this first floor wing, it has a standard double bed with access from both sides. There is one radiator, table, mirror, bedside tables, and a small coffee table. The room is carpeted. The en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower, washbasin and toilet. The floor has vinyl covering.

Fourth Level Bedrooms


      • Bedroom 401 (St Finbar)

This double bedroom is accessed by taking the lift to level 4, through the glass door and turn right. The corridor is carpeted throughout. This is a 4ft 6in double-bedded room with access both sides. A dressing table, mirror, two chairs, fitted wardrobe, small table with tea and coffee making facilities are contained in the bedroom. The en-suite bathroom has a shower cubicle and a toilet on a lower level and washbasin on an upper level. The bedroom and bathroom are carpeted throughout. Radiators are in both bedroom and bathroom.

      • Bedroom 402 (Haverstock Room)

This twin bedded room is next door to the room above. The two beds are accessible from both sides. The room is carpeted throughout. A dressing table, bedside tables, fitted wardrobe, easy chair and desk chair furnish the room. The ceiling does slope down at the right hand-side. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and toilet on the same level. A sky-light window is positioned on a sloping ceiling wall in the bathroom. Radiators are in both bedroom and bathroom.

      • Bedroom 403 (The Quaker Room)

There is a 4ft 6in double-bedded room with access from both sides. Dressing table, mirror, two chairs and lighting complete the furnishings. There is carpeting throughout. Ceiling beams slope down towards the window. The en-suite bathroom has a shower cubicle, toilet and washbasin. The bathroom window has a venetian blind. Radiators are situated in both rooms.

      • Bedroom 404 (Friends’ Room)

This is a mirror image of Room 403: 4ft 6in double-bedded room with access from both sides; dressing table, mirror, 2 chairs and lighting. There is carpeting throughout. The ceiling beams slope towards the window. The ensuite bathroom has a shower cubicle, toilet and washbasin. The bathroom window has a venetian blind. There are radiators in both rooms.

      • Bedroom 405 (Howard Williams)

This twin-bedded room is next door to the room above. The two beds are accessible from both sides. The room is carpeted throughout. A dressing table, bedside tables, fitted wardrobe, easy chair and desk chair are all present in the room. The ceiling slopes down at the right hand-side of the room. The bathroom has a bath and toilet on the same level. A sky-light window is positioned on a sloping ceiling wall. Radiators are in both bedroom and bathroom. This room is particularly suitable for visitors who require wheelchair access. The bathroom has safety holds fitted adjacent to the toilet. The bathroom is large enough for wheelchair access. A bath seat is available on request for disabled visitors.

Additional Information


Sarum College has a full fire certificate. There is a full and comprehensive fire alarm system, and smoke detectors are installed in every room. All bedrooms have Fire Action Instructions in place. In the event of a fire the fire alarm will be activated automatically. The Duty Manager will be on hand to evacuate the building. The muster area in the event of a fire is through the front door and across the road to the corner of the Cathedral grassed area.

The lift is not operational when the fire alarm is activated. Visitors occupying bedrooms on levels 1 and 3 should use the stairs clearly marked as Fire exits. Level 4 visitors should also use stairs, marked as a Fire exit, leading down the stairs and leave the building through the Fire Exit door on the ground floor (a key is accessed by breaking the glass panel).

All stairwells and public areas ie corridors are illuminated by emergency lighting in the event of a power failure.

There is always a Duty Manager present in the building and overnight when guests are staying at Sarum College.

There is no smoking within Sarum College.

Special dietary requirements can be catered for upon request.

There is no public telephone in the building, but a mobile phone held at Reception is available for guest use.
