This programme is designed for those who wish to pursue an independent research project, for personal interest, professional development, sabbatical and/or for publication.
This programme is not accredited and therefore does not result in the conferring of any award.
This programme offers supervision with a member of the Sarum Faculty, and the programme can be undertaken on an annual, 3-month sabbatical, per-supervision or bespoke package basis. Details on each below.
You will be offered six supervisions per year of one hour each with a member of the Sarum Faculty. These supervisions will be roughly spaced every other month, and you would be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read and comment on two weeks ahead of each supervision date. The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of each meeting.
In addition to six supervisions per year, you would be entitled to attend one Sarum Study Day per year as well as membership of the Sarum College Library. Details and dates for Sarum Study Days can be found on the course calendar page.
Over the course of 3 to 4 months, you will be offered three supervisions of one hour each with a member of the Sarum Faculty. These supervisions will be roughly spaced every month, and you would be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read and comment on two weeks ahead of each supervision date.
The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of each meeting.
In addition to the three supervisions, you would be entitled to attend one Sarum Study Day within or just prior to or following your sabbatical as well as a one-year membership of the Sarum College Library. Details and dates for Sarum Study Days can be found on the course calendar page.
On admittance to the programme, you will agree with a supervisor the number of supervisions to be offered over a certain period of time. Each supervision will be approximately 1 hour, and you would be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read and comment on two weeks ahead of the supervision date.
The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of the meeting.
On this programme, you will pay on a per-supervision basis and in addition to feed for access to the library or Sarum Study Days.
We are also happy to create bespoke supervision packages, which could also include short courses as well as bed and breakfast accommodation.

To apply for the programme, please contact the Director of Research at ssnyder@sarum.ac.uk with the following:
• 300 word proposal on the topic of your research
• CV
• A piece of written work
As a general rule, you should either have undertaken a dissertation at undergraduate level or have completed a Masters Degree in order to enrol on this programme.
The Director of Research will consult with faculty colleagues to see if a suitable supervisor is available to take the project on and will then inform you as to whether you have been granted a place. If accepted, you would then agree a mutually suitable start date as well as the number of supervisions (if choosing the per-supervision option).
For a 2024 start date, the fees are as follows:
Annual Guided Independent Research Programme (including 6 x one hour supervisions plus supervisor preparation time, library access and a Sarum Study Day)
£750 per year
3-month Sabbatical Guided Independent Research Programme (including 3 x one hour supervisions plus supervisor preparation time, library access and a Sarum Study Day)
£390 one-off payment
Per Supervision Guided Independent Research Programme (1 x one hour contact time plus supervisor preparation time)
£120 per supervision
A bespoke package will take into account the number of supervisions and other aspects required and build a fee based on the above figures as a model and will be agreed between Sarum and the researcher.
All fees for the annual and 3-month sabbatical programmes and the for the full number of supervisions agreed on the per-supervision programme must be paid in advance of the first supervision.
