Visiting Scholar
Jonathan is the Director of Learning for Ministry for the Methodist Church in Britain. A Methodist presbyter, he has served in local church ministry, in chaplaincy in a range of contexts, as a university lecturer and in theological education. Born in the Black Country and raised in the Cambridgeshire Fens, he’s enjoyed living and working both in the USA and the UK, and in places of great diversity and human variety. He currently lives in north London.
Primarily, Jonathan’s research interests are rooted in approaches to Christian history in general, and the English Reformation in particular, through the lens of the experience of the Catholic community in England in that period of turbulence, challenge and change. In addition, and through his own experiences of life and ministry, he has taught and written on questions of religious diversity, ecumenical and interfaith engagement, and Jewish-Christian relations, including Holocaust education. At the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, he led work on continuing ministerial formation, including teaching courses on missional engagement and community ministry. Jonathan has published several books and articles; the most recent is To Gain at Harvest, published by SCM Press.
Amid so much in the life of the Church and the world which is challenging us, and posing unprecedented questions, he is honoured and excited to join with the vibrant and creative community of faith and scholarship at Sarum in mining “our traditions’ richest store” in seeking to be faithful in response.
