When you stay at Sarum College in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close, the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral is just steps away.
Situated in Grade I-Listed buildings, the oldest part of the college dates from 1677 and is attributed to Sir Christopher Wren. By day, Sarum is a working further education college and conference venue. Many students choose to stay at Sarum while attending courses but our rooms and hospitality are open to all.
Forty of our 52 guest bedrooms are en-suite. The Wren bedrooms at the front of the College have uninterrupted views of the Cathedral, several others have lovely views overlooking the rooftops of the Close and spire. Rooms are single, double and twin; all have tea and coffee-making facilities. There are no televisions in bedrooms however guests may use the one in the Wilson Room or simply make use of the free wifi throughout the building.
For the traveller on a budget there are also a limited number of no-frills standard rooms with shared bath/shower and toilet facilities.
The lift gives access to all the floors, and there is a common room with easy chairs and licensed bar for guest use.
The Cathedral Close is in central Salisbury, a five-minute walk from the High Street with shops, cafes and a twice-weekly market. There are excellent cultural venues within the Close: the Salisbury Museum, The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, Arundells (Sir Edward Heath’s former home) and Mompesson House, a fine National Trust property. Just beyond the Close walls you’ll find Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury Arts Centre, City Hall and the Odeon Cinema. The World Heritage Site of Stonehenge is a short bus journey away.
There are dozens of buzzing restaurants, pubs and bars just a few minutes’ walk away. Overnight guests can borrow a Close gate key to come and go as you please once the Cathedral Close gates are locked (10:30pm these days, but it was 7pm in the 15th century!).
And when you return, the peace and beauty of the Cathedral and surrounding Close is all yours.
