Learning, Retreat and Respite

Support the College

Sarum College is completely independent with no access to funding from faith or government bodies. Help us to share the gift of this space and community more widely by making a financial contribution to our work through a legacy, donation or regular giving.

Your donation will help us maintain the Grade 1 listed historic buildings, improve our learning programmes and offer financial support to those seeking to retreat or study here.

Why give to Sarum?

A gift transformed a vision for a centre for retreat and theological learning into a reality. With the means to buy the house that is now 19 The Close, the Bishop of Salisbury in 1860 founded the theological college which has become Sarum College. More than 150 years later, gifts of any size continue to help ensure this unique place of beauty, respite and community is here to nurture seekers and learners now and in the future.

Regular Giving Donations

Regular giving is a convenient way to contribute to essential building and programme resources to ensure Sarum College continues to thrive.

You can give to Sarum College online via our Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) profile. Or by setting up regular donations through your bank. We are grateful for gifts of any size.

Gift Aid

If you are a taxpayer setting up a regular bank transfer, you can increase the value of donations through Gift Aid which allows us to reclaim basic rate tax on your gift.

You can do this by emailing us the following with your name and address completed:

YOUR NAME YOUR ADDRESS

confirm that:

      • I want to Gift Aid all qualifying gifts of money made today and any donations I make in the future or have made in the past four years to Sarum College, a registered charity in England and Wales (1161253).
      • I am a UK taxpayer and understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year it is my responsibility to pay any difference.
      • I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

Leave a Legacy

A gift in your will may allow you to give more generously than is possible in your lifetime.

Your gift, however large or small, will help make the College’s space and resources more accessible.

Leaving an unrestricted legacy allows us to use your gift wherever the need is greatest, including education and outreach programmes, as well as projects to conserve and improve our heritage buildings.

Alternatively, you may specify the area of personal interest towards which your gift should be directed.

If you would like to know more about leaving a legacy to Sarum College, we would be pleased to discuss your wishes in more detail.

Frequently asked questions about legacies

I’ve already made a will – how easy is it to change it?

Your solicitor can help you add a form called a codicil to your existing will. Making changes yourself could render your existing will invalid.

What is the appropriate wording to include in my will? We are happy to send you suggested wording and strongly advise using a qualified solicitor to amend an existing will to ensure your wishes are properly recorded.

Are there tax benefits to leaving a Legacy to Sarum College?

Your gift is exempt from Inheritance Tax and could reduce the tax payable. Those who leave 10% or more of their estate to charity benefit from a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax (36% instead of 40%).

Can I choose what my legacy is used for?

Yes. Legacies for specific use are welcome as well as legacies to the College, which allows us to designate the funds to projects with the highest priority.

How would my legacy gift be acknowledged?

Unless you wish to remain anonymous, your name will be recorded in our Book of Remembrance as a permanent tribute to all our benefactors. Legacy gifts over £1000 are also recorded in the Sarum College Annual Report & Accounts.
