Guided Independent Research Programme

Home Guided Independent Research Programme

This programme is designed for those who wish to pursue an independent research project, for personal interest, professional development, sabbatical and/or for publication.

This programme is not accredited and therefore does not result in the conferring of any award.

This programme offers supervision with a member of the Sarum Faculty. We can only offer supervision in areas of faculty expertise, and so we would need to discuss an application with you. The programme can be undertaken on a 12-month, 3-month sabbatical, or one-off supervision basis. We do not offer supervision for more than a year. Details on each below.

People often combine this with staying at Sarum College for personal study time. Learn more about bed and breakfast, private stays, retreats and study breaks

12-month Programme

You will be offered four supervisions of one hour each with a member of the Sarum Faculty during the year. These supervisions will be ideally spaced one every three months. You will be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read (up to a maximum of 2500 words) and comment on two weeks ahead of each supervision date. The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of each meeting.

Please note that this programme is for 12 months, and will not be extended beyond that period. Any supervisions not taken within that period will be forfeited.

In addition to four supervisions per year, you would be entitled to attend one Sarum Study Day per year as well as membership of the Sarum College Library. Details and dates for Sarum Study Days are on the course calendar page.

3-month (Sabbatical) Programme

Over the course of 3 months, you will be offered two supervisions of one hour each with a member of the Sarum Faculty. These supervisions will be spaced in agreement with the supervisor, but ideally one near the start of the three months and the other nearer the end. You will be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read (up to a maximum of 2500 words) and comment on two weeks ahead of each supervision date. The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of each meeting.

Please note that this programme is for 3 months, and will not be extended beyond that period. Any supervisions not taken within that period will be forfeited.

In addition to the two supervisions, you would be entitled to attend one Sarum Study Day within or just prior to or following your sabbatical as well as a one-year membership of the Sarum College Library. Details and dates for Sarum Study Days are on the course calendar page.

One-off Supervision Programme

A one-off supervision with a faculty member can be very helpful to begin a personal research project, for instance in writing an article or starting a sabbatical. This allows you to take advantage of a supervision without tying yourself in to further supervisions. You will agree a date with your supervisor. You will be expected to send your supervisor any work you wish them to read (up to a maximum of 2500 words) and comment on two weeks ahead of each supervision date. The supervisor will be guided by you as to the focus of each meeting.

Unlike our other packages, this arrangement does not include access to the library or Sarum Study Days, though both can be purchased separately. Details and dates for Sarum Study Days are on the course calendar page.

Admissions Process

To apply for the programme, please contact Clair James on cjames@sarum.ac.uk with the following:

• 300 word proposal on the topic of your research
• CV
• A piece of written work

As a general rule, you should either have undertaken a dissertation at undergraduate level or have completed a Masters Degree in order to enrol on this programme.

Faculty colleagues will review your proposal, including ensuring that we are able to offer the necessary availability and expertise to supervise you. If accepted, we will follow up with you to agree a mutually suitable start date.
