Foundations and Forms of Christian Spirituality (2021) course
This course will introduce students to the roots and types of spirituality in the Christian tradition up to the late Medieval period. We also will explore a number of spiritual traditions within Christianity and enable students to place them in their historical and philosophical contexts. We will be focusing on the Greek roots of Christian spirituality, as well as considering monastic, Celtic, and Orthodox spiritualities.
Students will become aware of the problems we face in matters of interpretation when dealing with classical spiritual texts and will explore different ways of interpreting and applying ideas in these texts.
This module is an excellent introduction to the historical study of Christian Spirituality. It is part of the Christian Spirituality postgraduate studies programme and is open to ‘auditors’ eg those who join the course without receiving academic credit.
What does it mean to audit a module?
