“Other Brands are available” Changing your Spiritual Tradition course
Sometimes a spiritual tradition that we have grown up with or valued over many years loses its original attraction and even power for us. This doesn’t mean we have to lose our faith altogether. In fact, it is quite normal, but how do we transition from one tradition to another? How do we let go of what was, while not dismissing it out of hand and, at the same time find riches for our spiritual life within another tradition? In this retreat we address all these questions in a spirit of openness and inquiry into what God might be up to in each participant.
We will share our experiences in a safe space and discover resources for finding new life in what is emerging. Bring yourself, wherever you are in this transition and be open to God. We will use a tried and tested framework for how transitions happen, we will dwell in a pertinent bible text several times and there will be a mixture of short talks, group interaction and reflective personal space. For those who wish (while we have capacity) there will be an opportunity to meet with a spiritual director for 30-40 minutes.
Nigel Rooms has been a spiritual director for over fifteen years and has published on the subject of direction in “Soul Friendship” – and on transitions in a book called “Crossing Thresholds”. He has a portfolio of roles beyond tutoring at Sarum College from being an Associate Priest to a International Journal Editor and consultant church development. He has changed his own tradition at least twice which was sometimes painful as well as fruitful.
