Womanist Theology: An Introduction course
Starting with an introduction to the concept of Womanism, the course will overview some of the key principles and ideas of Womanist Theology, tracing some of its central concepts as they have developed within the Academy and also considering their impact as a developing social/cultural and spiritual movement within America and across African diasporic communities globally.
Key to the session will be:
– An understanding of Alice Walker’s four-part definition of Womanism.
– Womanist theological distinctiveness from Black Theology and Feminism/Feminist Theology.
– An overview of Womanist theology’s methodological and epistemological emphases.
– An introduction to key thinkers within the field
-Reflections on what Womanist Theology offers theological thinking.
The session will be delivered through a slide presentation with opportunities provided for questions, reflections, and engagement. Participants do not need prior knowledge of the subject, but should be willing to contribute to breakout room discussions based on the content provided and their own general life experience.
Dr Valentina Alexander has taught undergraduates and MA students in the Centre for Black Theology at The Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham, since 2019. Her subject areas have included Womanist Theology, Black Church history and ecclesiology, Liberation Theologies, The Church and Community Action, and Methodology.
Valentina’s research background was centred around Liberation theology and the Black Church in the UK. Her current interests include Womanist theological developments and expressions within the UK.
