The teaching and research at Sarum College is enhanced by our Visiting Scholars, who bring their wider learning and expertise to the College community. We are delighted to welcome Dr Gillian T.W. Ahlgren into our Visiting Scholar community.
Dr Ahlgren is a scholar, teacher and practitioner of the Christian mystical tradition. She is internationally known for her work on Teresa of Avila and has published widely. Her particular interests include the ways that mystics map the journey toward more collaborative relationship with God, the transformative principles at work in the mystical life, and the practical relevance of spiritual and theological resources from the Christian mystical tradition for people today.
“Gillian Ahlgren is a scholar of international reputation” says James Woodward, Sarum College Principal. “She is a skilled facilitator and teacher who has had a long association with the College. I am delighted that she has accepted our offer to become a Visiting Scholar and we look forward to working with her on future projects and teaching.”
Michael Hahn, Programme Leader for the postgraduate programme in Christian Spirituality, says: “Gillian has, for many years, been among the leading scholars of the Spanish mystical writers (including Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ignatius of Loyola and others) and of the Christian contemplative and spiritual traditions more broadly. As well as her historical-textual scholarship, she incorporates the lived experiences of people today and how these texts might impact and transform them.”
“Gillian has taught at Sarum College for the MA in Christian Spirituality, contributed to dissertation supervision and to short courses as well as leading retreats on Teresa and webinars on The Spiritual Exercises. We are already planning future courses with Gillian and we are excited to see this relationship blossom.”
