Postgraduate study to develop your thinking and practice

April 2025

Sarum College may have special expertise in mysticism but two forthcoming online sessions are all about demystifying postgraduate study here.

Sarum offers two MA programmes, one in Theology, Ministry and Mission, and one in Christian Spirituality. Though it may seem daunting to take on a programme of study when life is hectic already, these courses are designed for busy people, and as our students can attest, the confidence boost and sense of wellbeing that learning brings is well worth the effort.

Join programme leader Dr Beth Dodd on June 3rd to learn about the Theology, Ministry and Mission programme, rigorous postgraduate-level study for independent students in a supportive community of discussion, debate and mutual learning where you will learn advanced skills of discernment, reflexivity and reflection on practice.

“This programme is ideal for anyone in Christian ministry, particularly curates looking to expand their learning, or those with an established ministry looking to refresh or deepen their reflection on practice,” she says. “Pathways are flexible so you can tailor the course to your particular ministry and learning and formational needs. The programmes are well-suited to curates, continuing ministerial development and lay ministers.”

“I have found the challenge and depth of study invigorating – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the MA at Sarum,” says Sophie, a mum of two small children who is studying for the MA alongside her ordination training. “The staff have been incredibly supportive, helping me to navigate the programme alongside my other commitments.

As an MA student in Theology, Ministry and Mission at Sarum College, I have discerned an ever-growing integration of the knowledge of the mind and the knowledge of the heart in my theological learning,” says Tatjana, an ordinand and full-time MA student. In the past, I would have seen these as largely separate, but at Sarum my academic learning feeds my faith and satisfies my intellectual curiosity.”

Sarum is a “place that welcomes a broad range of spiritual seekers – and provides and inclusive spiritual home” for its students, according to a recent review of the College’s ministry-related learning programmes.

If your interests are in Christian Spirituality, then the date for your diary is 18 June. Join programme leader Dr Michael Hahn to learn more about the postgraduate studies in Christian Spirituality and discuss your study interests. Read about the student experience from Sally Shaw and James Stickings.

“We build study skills support into our programmes, so there are lots of opportunities to develop research and writing skills,” he says. “Also, the programmes are flexible and can be slowed up or sped up to suit you. Teaching schedules are designed to fit around working life or other commitments, so you can take up further study without having to give up your job.”

“The MA in Christian Spirituality at Sarum College is the very best programme of its sort in the UK,” says Dr Ashley Cocksworth, University of Roehampton. “It blends contemporary and historical approaches, engages with some of the most influential texts, traditions, and thinkers in the history of Christian spirituality, and is taught and led by a distinguished team of scholars. It is attentive to practice and explores some of the most pressing theological and practical questions through the always generative and interesting lens of Christian spirituality.”

This MA programme can also be tailored for your needs. So if you just want to do a year of study and concentrate on a theme, we can help you choose modules on specific themes within Christian Spirituality.
