The Trustees of Sarum College are delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Dr Rob James as the next Principal, in succession to the Revd Canon Professor James Woodward, who retires at the end of June.
Until recently, Rob was Associate Professor and Director of Anglican Studies and Formation at the Vancouver School of Theology and an Archdeacon, and for the last six months he has been an interim Priest-in-Charge in downtown Vancouver. Previous roles have included Canon Chancellor at Wells Cathedral, parish priest in the Diocese of Gloucester, including being Assistant Director of Ordinands, and before that being a Self-Supporting Minister whilst working at GCHQ. He holds several degrees, including a doctorate from SOAS, University of London, on biblical interpretation. He has research interests in the New Testament, especially the Gospel of Luke, Pastoral Theology, and also in biblical storytelling. Rob is married to Jean. She is a secondary school mathematics teacher by profession.
Bishop John Inge, recently appointed Chair of Trustees, said: ‘Rob’s appointment is wonderfully good news for Sarum. He is an exceptionally able priest who is a gifted pastor as well as a considerable academic. He is a very worthy successor to James Woodward, and I look forward greatly to working with him.’
Bishop Alastair Redfern, outgoing Chair of Trustees, said: ‘Rob will bring an impressive mix of academic, ministerial, organisational and leadership skills to enable the next chapter of Sarum’s story to continue to be creative and effective. At a time of considerable pressure upon both theology and ministerial formation he is well equipped to enable the college to build upon its innovative style so as to be able to design and deliver the missionary resources we so badly need.’
Outgoing Principal, James Woodward, said: ‘Rob brings significant experience and skill into this leadership role. His academic credibility and ministerial experience will enrich and develop the next chapter of the life of the College. I look forward to supporting the handover for the responsibility of this vibrant community of learning and hospitality.’
Rob will take up this appointment on 1st August.
