Reading Scripture Together: Sabbath & Sacred Time course
One of the first commandments given by God in scripture is to honour a proportion of time, setting it apart from the activities of the everyday and reserving it for rest and reflection. Throughout the Torah, we get instructions on how to carve out sacred time through the rituals of festivals throughout the year as well as the weekly practice of Sabbath/Shabbat. But the Bible’s Temple-based orientation went through a radical shift when the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE. How did early Jews and Christians shift from a place-based tradition to one that is wholly located in Time? How did the early rabbis and disciples adapt the Biblical teachings to their own time period, and how has that adaptation continued to this day? Together, we will study both biblical and post-biblical texts to explore what it means to observe sacred time.
Reading Scripture Together
This series of conversational one-day courses explores selected sacred texts in detail to consider the ways they have been interpreted, both in the written word and in art, and on their relevance and meaning to us today.
